Intermodal Facility -- Austell, Georgia
Norfolk Southern Railway's intermodal facility at Austell, Ga., near Atlanta expedites the movement of containerized freight between the Northeast and Southwest and between the Northwest and Southeast.
Situated on 450 acres and with convenient access to Interstate 20, the hub features 20,000 feet of unloading tracks, 26,000 feet of support tracks, 3,000 parking spots for 12 x 53-foot trailers, 450 spaces for container stacking and 10 inbound/outbound lanes for trucks.
In order to accommodate current and future growth, Norfolk Southern (NS) selected NASCENT's SYNAPSE™ Automated Gate System (AGS) to expedite traffic into and out of the facility. The SYNAPSE™ AGS solution employed consists of two Portals (one In and one Out) for damage inspection and OCR of equipment entering and exiting the facility. There are also 6 inbound gate lanes and 5 outbound gate lanes (including one bobtail lane) equipped with SYNAPSE™ Kiosks and Lane Control modules to enable communications with the driver while providing visual confirmation (if necessary). The SYNAPSE™ Gate Control Software deployed at Austell, enables the registration of drivers, the inspection of equipment and communicates with NS's TOS.
